What's the big deal about VSAT, anyway?

For one thing, there are fewer points of potential failure or congestion, offering a direct, "one-hop" connection to the US Internet backbone from everywhere that we provide service.

Because it is difficult to make repairs in outer space, these satellite spacecraft are designed with multiple layers of redundancy and multiple backup systems, resulting in .99999 uptime. Already, there are other satellites in orbit which are immediately available in the unlikely case of a catastrophic failure.

Our underlying providers, Hughes, PanAmSat and others, operate their networks to the absolute highest level of redundancy and reliability, equaling or exceeding US military specifications in the manufacturing, launching and operation of their satellite spacecraft.

As Internet traffic and network traffic continues to grow exponentially, Internet and Network Service Providers, business, and consumers face the challenge of keeping up with demand for network bandwidth and developing creative solutions for squeezing more use out of existing bandwidth. Satellite-based network connections are one of those solutions. Hughes Network Services has offered customers scalable, cost-effective and secure Internet access since 1989.

Satellites provide:

  • NO DISTANCE LIMITATIONS! Satellite services are NOT limited by distance from a phone company Central Office (CO), such as the 18,000 feet limitation of DSL. There is NO degradation of service that is dependent on your location - either across town or across the country.

  • Faster and Less Vulnerable Installation: Satellite services are usually activated more quickly than terrestrial copper lines, such as DSL, Frame Relay, or ISDN. An antenna, modem and satellite circuit can take just a few days or weeks as opposed to the months often needed for fiber installation. Additional capacity can be obtained just as quickly. Another advantage to consider is the obvious vulnerability of the “local loop” used to provide traditional wired services like Cable, DSL or T-1. Consider that a satellite connection cannot possibly be interrupted by a backhoe, bridge or tunnel incident, fire, ice storm, downed telephone pole, etc …

  • Better Network Performance: Satellite connections enhance performance by linking directly to an Internet backbone, bypassing congested terrestrial lines and numerous router hops. Dedicated space segment, local loop circuits and ports into a major Internet backbone mean ISPs do not share infrastructure, another cause of slow or degraded connections over fiber.

  • Lower Network Costs: Satellites allow simultaneous information delivery to wide geographic areas without regard to terrestrial infrastructure or geographic barriers. This results in a pricing structure that is distance insensitive, keeping costs down. In addition, satellite capacity is easily matched to actual traffic patterns, meaning clients pay only for what they need. For a franchised organization or any larger, multi-location enterprise with locations nationwide, RemoteWorks offers a Private Network Option, adding security without the performance degradation of standard VPN's.

For this and other reasons, many companies who have a mission-critical need for data communications use satellite as either a primary, alternate or backup connection.
