What is RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAY?
RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAYTM, is a satellite-based high speed internet service. "Satellite-based" means your connection to the Internet is via a satellite rather than wires or coaxial cable. "High speed internet" means the connection speeds are more than 128Kbps (kilobits per second). Download speeds, depending on the selected plan, can actually reach 400Kbps, 750kbps, or 1Mbps—about eight to twenty times faster than a 56Kbps dial-up modem.

How fast is the connection?
DiRECWAY downloads data from the Internet to your PC at speeds starting about eight times faster than a dial-up modem! Data uploads via satellite at speeds 2-3 times faster than a dial-up modem, all without tying up your phone-line!

How do these speeds compare with DSL and cable modems?
The basic service plan is in the same general range as both of these technologies.

What does "two-way" service mean?
"Two-way" service means that data is both downloaded and uploaded via satellite. Some satellite systems, one-way systems, download via satellite, but upload via your telephone line through a dial-up modem. This is a slower uploading process, and it ties up your phone line when you're on the Internet. Two-way service means much faster uploads and downloads and no busy signals.

Is RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAY service available for both Mac and PC?
Sorry, the service is currently only available to PC users. The necessary software to interface with Mac is being developed, so Mac users should check back for updates.

Is RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAY service available in my area?
If you live in the continental United States, and have a clear view of the southern sky, you should be eligible. The satellite dish must have a completely unobstructed view of the southern sky. Which means no buildings, trees, hills, or other obstructions can block the line of sight between the satellite and your dish—not even partially.

No. They are connected via a separate cable, therefore only one USB connection is required.

Can I install the RemoteWorks powered DirecWay equipment myself?
No. Because the DiRECWAY equipment is highly sophisticated and FCC regulations for installing and pointing the antenna are very stringent, the equipment must be professionally installed by a certified installation technician.

I've noticed other satellite systems offered in retail stores for less. Why?
The system you saw was probably a one-way system. That means your connection to the Internet travels over telephone lines. Only the downloaded information comes via satellite. So, while you can download information at high speeds, you can still only upload at the maximum speed of a dial-up modem. You will also need to tie up your phone line when you are on the Internet. You also may have to pay long distance charges and you can get busy signals.

Are any special approvals required for the installation of my RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAT satellite dish?
You are responsible for any and all required approvals, permits, etc. The certified RemoteWorks installation technician will assume that all required approvals and permits have been secured. We suggest that you call your local City Hall to verify requirements.

How much does the equipment and installation cost?
There are several pricing tiers, depending on which plan you select, the size of dish to be installed and your physical address. Please refer to our price availability section or verify specific pricing with your RemoteWorks representative.

Do I need a phone line to connect to the Internet?
A phone line is required for the initial installation with your certified RemoteWorks installer. Once the service has been installed and activated no phone line is required. If you do not have a telephone line, please notify your dealer and installer so that alternate arrangements can be made.

What software and online activities might be incompatible with a DiRECWAY connection?
Your satellite connection won't prevent you from doing the things you like on the Web. However, certain time-sensitive Internet applications (NetMeeting, NetPhone, online games, and any application that connects to a virtual private network) don't perform their best over a satellite connection.

Any signal you send from your computer via satellite has to travel over 44,000 miles to space and back again in order to deliver your information, and because of this, a certain lag occurs in real-time communications that you send to a friend or to an Internet site. (By contrast, Web pages, which you download, will arrive very quickly.)

If you use NetMeeting, NetPhone, any application that connects to a virtual private network please contact RemoteWorks for information on our special public/private network offering. If you play online games such as Quake, CounterStrike, Diablo, or EverQuest, please discuss your options with a dealer before you order RemoteWorks powered DiRECWAY. These applications will work, but they might not be much faster over satellite than they are over a dial-up modem.
